Spartan team members are some of the top players in their respective recreational leagues. As a result, most of them are pitchers, catchers, and/or shortstops in Little League/Cal Ripken. Unfortunately, there are six other field positions that Spartans need to fill during tournaments. In addition, it is in the best interest of every player to learn to play a variety of positions. Playing time can be affected by the ability of a player to play multiple positions on the field.
This is referenced in our Spartan Manual as follows:
" 2. No player is guaranteed playing time. It will be the goal of each coach to provide playing time for each player within each game within a league or within the pool play of a tournament. However, playing time is earned and within the playoff portion of tournaments or leagues, the coach has the discretion to manage the game in a manner he/she feels is best for the success of the team.
3. It is the coaching philosophy of the SBA to be developmental in nature overall. The emphasis on development of life skills in addition to baseball/softball skills to reflect our mission is a goal. Winning games and tournaments will not be a priority over development, but is important in building self-esteem, confidence and provides further motivation. Success breeds success.
4. Coaches have the discretion to utilize players within the rules of the game/tournament and within their teams. Players must be open to suggestions of position changes, substitution and removal from a game for the good of the team."
